Manage Agent Versions with Drafts and Publishing
Every agent in Agent Studio has two kinds of versions: editable drafts and numbered, read-only published versions. All of the agent's interfaces (chat, API, bots, schedules, and the catalog) run the one published version that is marked Published. You make changes in a draft and publish it when it is ready; you can also make an earlier published version live again in one step.
Before you start
- To create drafts, publish, and roll back, you need a role with Manage selected under Studio - Agents in the role's permissions.
- With Read only under Studio - Agents, you can open Version History and view versions but not change them.
Drafts and published versions
| Term | What it is | How it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | An editable working copy. Changes are saved automatically and do not affect anything that is live. | Draft badge in Version History. The autosave indicator shows Saving... and then Saved. |
| Published version | A read-only snapshot with a whole version number (1.00, 2.00, and so on). Publishing a draft creates the next number. | The live one carries the Published badge; other published versions show their number, for example v2. |
| Publish | The action that makes a version live. Every enabled interface switches to it at the same time. | Publish button on a draft; Publish this version on an earlier published version. |
| Deprecated | A published version you have hidden from the list. It can be restored at any time. | Deprecated badge; hidden when Hide deprecated is selected. |
Open Version History
- Open the agent in Agent Studio.
- In the toolbar at the top right, click the clock icon (Open Versions). The Version History panel opens.
The panel lists drafts first, then published versions with the newest at the top. Each entry shows its badge, who created it and when, and the version notes. Click any entry to open that version on the canvas.
At the top of the list, use the All versions / Hide deprecated menu to show or hide deprecated versions, and New Draft to start a new draft from the version you have open. At the bottom, Enabled Interfaces lists the interfaces that run the published version.
Edit in a draft
Edits happen in drafts. When you open a published version, the toolbar shows Previewing version: with the version number and the canvas is read-only.
To start editing:
- From the version you are viewing: click Copy in draft in the toolbar. A new draft with that version's contents opens; the published version is unchanged.
- From any version in Version History: click the ⋯ menu on a published version and select Copy in draft.
- Continue an existing draft: click Open latest draft in the toolbar, or select the draft in Version History.
While you work, changes save automatically. Use inline Test mode to try the draft; see Building and Testing Agents. The draft does not run for users or automations until you publish it.
To remove a draft you no longer need, open its ⋯ menu and select Discard draft.
Publish a draft
In the toolbar at the top right, click Publish. The first time an agent is published, a Publish agent panel opens: under Publish to: choose whether to also publish to the Airia Catalog (the API Endpoint is always published). If you select Airia Catalog, choose Public or Private visibility. Click Publish agent.
If a step references a model that is scheduled for retirement, a warning appears before the version is created. See Model Deprecation for what the warning means and how to respond.
In Version History, open the ⋯ menu on the new version, select Edit details, enter a Version name and Version notes, and click Save. Notes appear under the version in the list, so describe what changed.
You'll see the message Agent published successfully. The new version appears at the top of the published versions in Version History with the Published badge, the draft you published is removed, and every enabled interface now runs the new version.
Roll back to an earlier version
Any published version that is not deprecated can be made live again without re-editing.
- Open Version History.
- On the version you want to make live, click the ⋯ menu and select Publish this version.
- In the Publish version N? dialog, read the notice: All of this agent's interfaces — chat, API, bots, and the catalog — will be directed to version N immediately. Click Publish.
You'll see Version N is now published, and the Published badge moves to that version. No new version number is created, and any drafts in progress are untouched. The change is recorded in the System Log with who published it and which version was live before.
To roll back with changes, use Copy in draft on the older version, edit the draft, and Publish it. That path creates a new version number.
Work with other people's drafts
Drafts are visible to everyone who can open the agent. When a teammate has a draft on the same agent, Version History shows an Other people's drafts section at the top of the panel. Expand it to see those drafts, and use the user filter (set to All users by default) to narrow the list to one author.
For each draft, the ⋯ menu offers:
- View draft opens it read-only. A banner reads You're viewing this draft. Select Edit to make changes. Click Edit to take over editing if nobody else is editing it.
- Edit draft opens it and takes over editing, if nobody else is editing it.
- Copy as my draft creates your own draft from it, named Draft from the original's name with today's date. The original is unchanged.
There is no per-person sharing step: access follows the agent's project permissions.
One editor at a time
Only one person edits a draft at a time. When a draft is already being edited, you can still open it, and a banner explains the state:
| Banner | Meaning |
|---|---|
| [Name] is editing this draft. You can view it, but changes are turned off until they finish. | A teammate holds the draft. |
| You're editing this draft somewhere else. You can view it here, but changes are turned off until that session finishes. | Another tab, window, or session signed in as you is editing the same draft. |
| Another user is editing this draft. You can view it, but changes are turned off until they finish. | The draft is held by a user whose name is not available. |
The banner also shows Available to edit from [time] if they stop. If the current editor stays idle past that time, the draft becomes available and you can take it over. While a draft is held elsewhere, the autosave indicator reads Not saving — another editor has this draft or Not saving — you have this draft open somewhere else.
If someone takes over a draft you had open, a dialog titled Your editing session ended explains what happened and offers Reload the draft. Recent changes you made in that tab were not saved, so reload and review the draft before continuing.
Deprecate a version
To hide an old published version from the list, open its ⋯ menu and select Deprecate version. The live version cannot be deprecated. Deprecated versions stay in the history: switch the list to All versions to see them, and use ⋯ → Restore version to bring one back. Until a deprecated version is restored, it cannot be published or copied.
Copy a version into a new agent
To start a separate agent from a draft or a published version that is not deprecated, open its ⋯ menu and select Copy in a new agent. The new agent gets its own version history.
